What is critical thinking? Everyone seems sure that it is a good thing, but many of its advocates would struggle to describe it in anything but the most general terms. In this presentation I will show how critical thinking is taught in philosophy departments, with a special focus on fallacies, causal arguments, and analogies. I will also reflect on ways in which my colleagues and I have worked to integrate philosophical critical thinking into the curricula of degrees beyond the humanities, including the University of Sydney's B Med Sci and MBA.
Communicating the process, results and impact of research is a critical part of every scientist’s job - but one that many find intimidating. I will explore the use of various technology platforms for communication of biomedical research and creative engagement of broad audiences. I will discuss various approaches, with a focus on the use of social media and mobile apps. In particular, we are interested in creative approaches to complex data visualization and development of a mobile app using music to explore the intersection between genetics and environment.
