Oceans and estuaries underpin the well-being of all life on earth but their inaccessibility has rendered them largely invisible to humans. We promote the understanding of science by bringing marine ecosystems into the light and allowing people to connect with the physically, chemically and biologically active worlds that lie below. With >85% of Australian’s living within 50km of the coast – coastal ecosystems are a portal into science and understanding these systems requires an understanding of many scientific concepts and science thinking skills.
Our aim is to promote mutual understanding between scientists and the public by developing a portfolio of stories based on a coherent framework with tools that can be easily syndicated and adapted for urban estuaries around the coast. We want to not only expand the scientific thinking of multiple audiences, but crucially to build support for evidence-based environmental management of coastal ecosystems. To develop this toolkit we are creating a portfolio of stories and activities that deliver key concepts and develop science-thinking skills for a diverse array of non-traditional audiences. This presentation will introduce a range of activities that match science stories to target audiences and their values.
