Rami Al-Dirini

Speaker Image

Biography

Dr Rami Al-Dirini’s research combines medical/synchrotron imaging and in-vivo and in-vitro experiments with multiscale finite element modelling to a) comprehensively evaluate existing prostheses performance and develop novel devices with improved performance, and b) study bone and soft tissue biomechanics to understand biomechanical injuries, including bone fractures and pressure sores. These injuries affect a large proportion of the population but are most common in the elderly population and in-patients with chronic conditions, such as osteoarthritis, diabetes and spinal cord injury, as well as amputees, wheelchair users and bed-ridden patients. Through his research, Rami aspires to improve injury prevention, care and treatment.

Carolina Andrade

Speaker Image

Biography

Dr Carolina Andrade is associate professor of medicinal chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Federal University of Goiás (UFG), Brazil, and head of the Laboratory for Molecular Modeling and Drug Design – LabMol since 2010. Carolina obtained her PhD in drugs and medicines from University of São Paulo, Brazil, with an internship at University of New Mexico in the US under the supervision of Professor Antony Hopfinger. Her research focuses on computer-assisted and artificial intelligence-oriented drug design, aiming at discovering new drug candidates for neglected and emerging diseases. Her research also focuses on the development and application of AI tools and QSAR models for the prediction of toxicity properties of chemical compounds. Her major software tools and models developed are publicly available in LabMol web portal www.labmol.com.br. She was awarded the For Women in Science award from L’Oréal–UNESCO and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) in 2014 and the International Rising Talents award from L’Oréal–UNESCO in 2015. She has been elected to the Young Academy of ABC and to the Global Young Academy. She was treasurer, vice-director and director of the medicinal chemistry division of the Brazilian Chemical Society. Currently, she is a board member of SBQ, acting as adjunct treasurer.

Research interests: drug design and discovery; medicinal chemistry; artificial intelligence; drug repositioning; COVID-19; infectious diseases; neglected diseases

Collaboration ideas: To establish collaborations in the complex and interdisciplinary area of drug discovery. My participation in this workshop will enable the dissemination of the work that has been developed in my research group at UFG, of our expertise and infrastructure to address this urgent worldwide problem such as COVID-19 and other problems of interest to our society, such as neglected and emerging diseases.

Katie Attwell

Speaker Image

Biography

Dr Katie Attwell is a global research leader in vaccination social science and public policy. Through her VaxPolLab at the University of Western Australia, she builds agile collaborative teams to address pressing problems in vaccination and public policy. Her skillsets in theoretical and applied research and a wide network of global collaborators allow her to contribute within her discipline as a policy scholar, and beyond it as a vaccination social scientist.

As an expert in the social determinants of vaccination uptake and government policies, as well as misinformation and health behaviours, Katie is leading significant COVID-19 vaccination social research in Australia. She developed the interdisciplinary mixed-method project, Coronavax: Preparing Community and Government, and has secured $425 000 in funding. She studies and evaluates mandatory vaccination policies across Australia and the globe, and provides expert advice to Commonwealth Government committees and the Western Australia health department.

Research interests: vaccination policy; vaccine hesitancy; vaccine uptake

Collaboration ideas:
- Qualitative research on vaccine hesitancy and uptake
- Research on mandatory vaccination policies (key informant interviews, document analysis etc.)
- Research on knowledge challenges: what is (un)known by the government about who is under-vaccinated, and why, in order to develop policies to address.
